Resources for Portland, Oregon First-time Home Buyers
Jul 2nd, 2007 by Jody McLeod
Where do you turn to find information when you are a first-time home buyer in Portland? If you are a newbie to the home buying arena, the amount of information can be mind-boggling, if not a bit overwhelming. What are the basics you should know when buying a home? Are there any loan programs available for first-time buyers? What do you need to watch out for? What is escrow? What is closing? ACK!
A couple of days ago I was reading the Portland Tribune’s ReTHINKING PORTLAND insert and there was a great article explaining the many resources available to first-time buyers. Here is a quick listing of the organizations to help you navigate the home-buying maze:
- Oregon Housing and Community Services - Lower income loan programs from Oregon.gov, including the Oregon Bond Program
- Portland Housing Center - Non-profit. Offers home-buying classes and workshops for buyers and has counseling available for folks regarding credit issues and financial questions.
- Portland Community Land Trust - A partnering program. The Trust buys the land, the home-buyer buys the home. When the house is resold down the line, the proceeds are dividied up between the home-owner and the Trust.
- Portland Development Commission - PDC offers loan programs for both home buyers and home renovators.
- Lents Home Ownership Initiative - Program to improve the Lents area and to assist home buyers.
- Clackamas Community Land Trust - Home-buying education and financial assistance.
- Clackamas County Community Development - Down payment assistance for those buying in Clackamas County.
- African American Alliance for Home Ownership - Offers classes and lender lists.
Upcoming Home-Buying Fairs:
- Native American Housing to Homeownership Fair - July 28th, 501 N. Graham, Portland OR, 97227
- Asian and Pacific Islander Home Buying Fair - August 4th, 2305 SE 82nd and Division,
Portland, OR 97216 - Latino Home Buying Fair - Sept. 23; noon to 5 p.m., Portland Community College, Southeast Center, 2305 S.E. 82nd Ave., Portland, OR
